  • Think about why the image was taken. I think this image was taken to show the life of Marilyn Monroe and to highlight her drug problem.
  • What is the purpose? Story? To show how drugs affected her. Also, she destroyed this image by crossing it out on an original negative, that way if it was ever published, it would still show the red X going through it. This shows how she may have been ashamed of herself and didn’t want her fans to see her as a drug addict, but as the inspirational role model they thought she was. This image really shows her looking not quite herself, which when she saw it, she may have realized how bad her problem was.
  • Who took the image? Bert Stern.
  • Do you like the image? Why? I really like this image, it isn’t exactly what you would class as a ‘nice’ photo, but it is quite effective. The cross looks like it could be blood, which I think symbolises her death because of her drug and alcohol problem. I think it shows a lot of meaning, she didn’t want people to remember her that way.

  • Think about why the image was taken. This image was taken as a self-portrait to document Jo Spence’s confidence as she battled breast cancer.
  • What is the purpose? Story? X marks the spot. This shows where the tumour is/was but shows that she is a confident fighter. I think she took this image to inspire others that are also fighting cancer; she looks as if she may have lost one of her breasts, just below where the X is.
  • Who took the image? Jo Spence.
  • Do you like the image? Why? I really like the image as it shows meaning and shows her confidence and how strong and brave she is. I think the way she set up the photo really highlights what it is about as it has a quite sad look to it.
