Camera Techniques : APERTURE … Shallow Depth Of Field

EXAMPLE:

The aperture is the size of the opening of the lens. The smaller the number size, the shallower the depth of field is. As you can see in the example photo above, the main focus of the photo is the daisy at the front, whilst the ones behind it are blurry and unfocused. If you set the aperture ring on the lens to a really low number, such as 1.8, you get results like this. Beware that not all cameras go that low, some may only go down to about 3.5, but the results will be the same. This makes the size of the opening of the lens bigger, therefore being able to focus on just one point in the picture. This can often get confusing but if you remember that the smaller the number is, the bigger the opening of the lens is, thus making the depth of field shallower.

  • Think about why the image was taken. I think this image was taken to show the life of Marilyn Monroe and to highlight her drug problem.
  • What is the purpose? Story? To show how drugs affected her. Also, she destroyed this image by crossing it out on an original negative, that way if it was ever published, it would still show the red X going through it. This shows how she may have been ashamed of herself and didn’t want her fans to see her as a drug addict, but as the inspirational role model they thought she was. This image really shows her looking not quite herself, which when she saw it, she may have realized how bad her problem was.
  • Who took the image? Bert Stern.
  • Do you like the image? Why? I really like this image, it isn’t exactly what you would class as a ‘nice’ photo, but it is quite effective. The cross looks like it could be blood, which I think symbolises her death because of her drug and alcohol problem. I think it shows a lot of meaning, she didn’t want people to remember her that way.

  • Think about why the image was taken. This image was taken as a self-portrait to document Jo Spence’s confidence as she battled breast cancer.
  • What is the purpose? Story? X marks the spot. This shows where the tumour is/was but shows that she is a confident fighter. I think she took this image to inspire others that are also fighting cancer; she looks as if she may have lost one of her breasts, just below where the X is.
  • Who took the image? Jo Spence.
  • Do you like the image? Why? I really like the image as it shows meaning and shows her confidence and how strong and brave she is. I think the way she set up the photo really highlights what it is about as it has a quite sad look to it.

SHAPE

shape colours1

Creating layers and using the marquee tool in Photoshop to change a level/colour of a selected section, creating a new layer each time and then flattening it into one image at the end. I used a picture I took of a vent fan to demonstrate this.

shape experimentation2

My second photo that I did was my portrait, which I used squares and changed the colour of them to create a pop-art effect.

shape experimentation3

My third and final image for the theme of shape was a photo of a lamp post, and again I used different sizes of random rectangles.
